Supporting Survivor Autonomy Through Pet Programs

Week of Nov. 3rd • 2025

Integrating Trauma-Informed Care into Pet Programs

As more domestic violence organizations recognize the vital bond between survivors and their pets, it’s essential that pet support programs are built using the framework of trauma-informed care. Policies and procedures designed to increase safety for both people and pets may unintentionally make survivors feel as though they are entering another system of power and control. At Willow Domestic Violence Center in Rochester, NY, Pet Program & Operations Coordinator Kate Rachiele works to ensure every part of the Pet Program reflects compassion, choice, and understanding. BestyBnB is proud to highlight our partnership with Willow Domestic Violence Center in a new webinar, Supporting Client Autonomy: Integrating Trauma-Informed Care into Pet Programs.

When survivor autonomy is centered, individuals are empowered to make decisions about their own lives and their pets, while minimizing re-traumatization and preserving the human–animal bond that is so vital to healing. Willow has long been a leader in survivor-centered advocacy, and by partnering with BestyBnB, the organization is expanding support for pet owners beyond emergency shelter services.

To continue this important conversation, join Supporting Client Autonomy: Integrating Trauma-Informed Care into Pet Programs on Tuesday, November 18, 2025. Through collaborations like this, BestyBnB is raising awareness about the critical link between domestic violence and animal abuse and expanding access to pet-inclusive safety solutions. With partners like Willow, BestyBnB builds stronger, more compassionate communities where survivors can find safety, healing, and hope without having to leave their pets behind.
