Healing Together: Understanding and Supporting Pets Impacted by Domestic Violence
When survivors of domestic violence make the brave decision to leave, their pets often experience trauma too. Many of these animals have witnessed or endured abuse, leaving them fearful, reactive, or withdrawn. Without proper understanding, these behaviors are often misinterpreted, creating barriers to placement, care, and long-term stability. As communities work to support survivors, it’s critical that we also address the unique needs of their animal companions.
This October, in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, BestyBnB is hosting Healing Together: Understanding and Supporting Pets Impacted by Domestic Violence, a free webinar designed to deepen understanding of animal trauma in DV situations. Led by Andria Gibbon, Founder and President of Protecting Paws for Life, this session will explore how trauma manifests in pets, why traditional approaches to care often fall short, and practical ways organizations can respond with compassion and expertise.
Whether you work in animal welfare, domestic violence services, or broader social services, this webinar will provide valuable insight into building more trauma-informed, pet-inclusive support systems. By recognizing the impact of violence on animals and learning how to respond, we can help survivors and their beloved pets heal—together.
