Responding to Oklahoma’s Domestic Violence Crisis: OK Humane’s Mission
Founded in 2007, the Oklahoma Humane Society (OK Humane) is the state’s largest nonprofit animal rescue organization, was originally established to address the staggering 25% live release rate at the local municipal shelter. Since then, their mission has expanded to enrich communities through lifesaving programs, including their Animal Advocacy Program (AAP). Led by Brittany Crow Cross, the AAP provides critical support for survivors of domestic violence and their pets through Palomar, the Family Justice Center in Oklahoma City. In a state with some of the highest rates of domestic violence in the nation, OK Humane ensures pets are not a barrier to safety.
When survivors of domestic violence are forced to flee abuse, they face nearly impossible choices, and often have no safe place for their beloved pets. In 2024 alone, OK Humane served 410 people and 1,155 animals, but finding foster homes for pets remains one of their greatest challenges. 99 animals were fostered last year, leaving boarding facilities as the primary alternative. But boarding is expensive, stressful for animals, and often unsustainable for survivors starting over. That’s where BestyBnB Pet Caregivers make a lifesaving difference. By opening their homes at a reduced cost, Pet Caregivers provide safe, stable, and comforting environments for pets, easing the emotional burden for survivors and the financial burden for OK Humane.
For survivors in crisis, knowing their pets are safe can be the difference between staying in danger or reaching safety. “Every Pet Caregiver makes an impact,” says Brittany. “You are helping save lives. Pets should never be a barrier to safety.” The partnership between BestyBnB and nonprofits like OK Humane is proof that collaboration can change lives - not only for survivors of domestic violence, but for families facing homelessness, veterans, or those navigating mental health crises. As this network grows, so does the hope that no one will have to choose between their safety and their pet.
